B-17 Flying Catfish Sculpture

Designing and building a fiberglass sculpture of a catfish and B-17 Bomber combined to withstand the elements is a meticulous and rewarding process that requires a careful, multi-step process that blends creativity, technical skill, attention to detail, and a keen artistic eye. We conceptualized the desired form, considered the sculpture’s overall shape, size, and client’s vision then created a sketch, carefully studying the unique features and structure to capture the accuracy of the object.

Construction of a sturdy armature, or internal framework, serves as the foundation for the sculpture. This structure will provide the necessary support for the foam. Which is carved by hand to the desired contours and dimensions. Then the fiberglass layers are meticulously applied, cutting and shaping the resin-infused fabric to achieve the desired contours and textures of the catfish’s sleek, streamlined body. As each layer is added, our artists must ensure proper adhesion and smoothness, blending the fiberglass seamlessly to create a cohesive, lifelike form creating a rigid shell that will maintain the sculpture’s shape.

The attention to detail continues as we meticulously sand and finish the fiberglass surface to a smooth, flawless finish, bringing out the subtle nuances of the catfish’s distinctive features, from its whisker-like barbels to its striking eyes and flowing fins. The final step of the process involves adding any additional details, textures, or surface treatments to the sculpture. This could include carving, painting, clear coats or the application of other materials to enhance the visual interest and artistic expression of the work.

Throughout the entire process, our fabricators maintain a keen eye for detail, balance technical precision with artistic expression, a steady hand, and a deep understanding of the unique properties and challenges of working with fiberglass and foam. Transforming a simple sketch into a captivating, three-dimensional work of art that showcases our team’s technical mastery and creative vision.
